উৎপত্তিঃ

 

এই প্রজাতিটি দক্ষিণ মেক্সিকো এবং মধ্য আমেরিকা এবং সম্ভবত উত্তর-পশ্চিম দক্ষিণ আমেরিকার স্থানীয়। গাছটি এশিয়া এবং আফ্রিকায় শোভাময় বা ফলের গাছ হিসাবে চাষ করা হয়।

বেলিজ, কোস্টারিকা, ইকুয়েডর, এল সালভাদর, মেক্সিকো, পানামা ইত্যাদির মতো অনেক দেশে এটি ছোট আকারে চাষ করা হয়।

 

বর্ণনাঃ

 

ইংরেজিতে এটি লেমন ড্রপ ম্যাঙ্গোস্টিন নামে পরিচিত। স্প্যানিশ ভাষায় একে মামেইতো বলা হয়। পর্তুগিজ ভাষায় এটিকে আচাচাইরু বলা হয়। আচাচাইরু নামটি গার্সিনিয়া হুমিলিসের ক্ষেত্রেও প্রয়োগ করা হয়, যা বলিভিয়ার স্থানীয় আরেকটি প্রজাতি, যেখানে বড়, গোলাকার বা ডিমের আকারের ফল রয়েছে।

 

পাতাঃ

 

পাতাগুলি বিপরীত, ছোট-পেটিয়লড, পুরু, চামড়া, উপবৃত্তাকার-আয়তাকার বা উপবৃত্তাকার-ল্যানসোলেট পাতা, ৩৩/১৬ থেকে ৬ ইঞ্চি (৮-১৫ সেমি) লম্বা, ৩/৪ থেকে ২ ইঞ্চি। (২-৫ সেমি) প্রশস্ত, বা অনেক বড়, উভয় পৃষ্ঠের উপর অসংখ্য পার্শ্বীয় শিরা সহ; উপরে গাঢ় সবুজ, নীচের দিকে ফ্যাকাশে বা বাদামী। তরুণ পাতাগুলি লালচে হয়।

 

ফুলঃ

 

পাতার নিচে ঘনভাবে গুচ্ছবদ্ধ ছোট, সবুজ-সাদা বা হাতির দাঁতের ফুলগুলি ৪-পাপড়ি, ২৫ থেকে ৩০ টি পুংলিঙ্গ সহ পুরুষ, ১০ থেকে ১২ টি সহ নিখুঁত। এটি একটি আকর্ষণীয় শোভাময় গাছ তৈরি করে, বিশেষ করে যখন ফল হয়, যা সারা বছর ধরে হতে পারে।

মহিলা ফুলগুলি একাকী এবং ম্যাঙ্গোস্টিনের ক্ষেত্রে তরুণ শাখার টার্মিনাল কুঁড়িগুলিতে বিকশিত একক বা মাঝে মাঝে ক্লাস্টারে (২-১০ ফুল) দেখা যায়, তবে অন্যান্য প্রজাতিতে টার্মিনাল কুঁড়ি এবং অ্যাক্সিলারি কুঁড়ি উভয়ই পাওয়া গেছে।

 

ফলঃ

 

ফলটি ডিম্বাকৃতি বা আয়তাকার, ৩/৪ থেকে ১.১/৪ ইঞ্চি। (২-৩.২ সেমি) দীর্ঘ, মসৃণ, কমলা বা হলুদ, পাতলা, নরম ত্বক সহজেই খোসা ছাড়ানো। একটি সামান্য মাংস, মিষ্টি বা অ্যাসিড রয়েছে, যা 1 বা 2 টি বীজের সাথে লেগে থাকে।

গাছটি দুই বছর পর ফল দিতে পারে। ফলগুলি প্রায় এক ইঞ্চি ব্যাসের মসৃণ গোলক এবং সাদা সজ্জার চারপাশে পাতলা হলুদ, কমলা বা লাল খোসা থাকে। এগুলি ভোজ্য এবং একটি আকর্ষণীয় মিষ্টি ও টক স্বাদ রয়েছে।

 

বিস্তারঃ

 

গাছটি সাধারণত বীজ থেকে বংশবিস্তারিত হয়, যদিও এটি গ্রাফ্ট করা যেতে পারে। কোনও নামযুক্ত জাত জানা যায় না। বীজগুলি শুকিয়ে গেলে কার্যকারিতা হারায়, তবে আর্দ্র রাখলে কয়েক মাস ধরে কার্যকারিতা বজায় রাখতে পারে। এটি গার্সিনিয়ার জন্য মোটামুটি দ্রুত-উত্পাদক এবং বীজ থেকে ২-৩ বছরের মধ্যে ফল দিতে পারে।

The American Barba Fruit Tree is also known as Lemon Drop Mangosteen Tree

 

 

Origin:

 

This species is native to southern Mexico and Central America and possibly to northwestern South America.  The tree is occasionally cultivated as an ornamental or fruit tree in Asia and Africa.

It is cultivated on a small scale in many countries like Belize, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama etc.

 

Description:

 

In English it is known as the lemon drop mangosteen, spanish it is called mameyito, portuguese it is called achachairu. The name achachairu is also applied to Garcinia humilis, another species native to Bolivia with larger, round or egg-shaped fruit.

 

Leaves:

 

Are opposite, short-petioled, thick, leathery, elliptic-oblong or elliptic-lanceolate leaves, 33/16 to 6 in (8-15 cm) long, 3/4 to 2 in. (2-5 cm) wide, or much larger, with numerous lateral veins conspicuous on both surfaces; dark-green above, pale or brownish on the underside. Young foliage is reddish

 

Flowers:

 

The small, greenish-white or ivory flowers, densely clustered below the leaves, are 4-petalled, the male with 25 to 30 stamens, the perfect with 10 to 12. It makes an attractive ornamental tree, especially when in fruit, which may be year-round.

Female flowers are solitary and occur in single or occasionally in clusters (2-10 flowers) developed at the terminal buds of young branches in case of mangosteen, but both terminal buds and axillary buds were found in the other species.

 

Fruit:

 

The fruit is oval or oblong, 3/4 to 1 1/4 in. (2-3.2 cm) long, smooth, orange or yellow, the thin, soft skin easily peeled. There is a little flesh, sweet or acid, adhering to the 1 or 2 seeds.

The tree may fruit after as little as two years. The fruits are smooth spheres about an inch in diameter with a thin yellow, orange or red rind around a white pulp. They are edible and have an appealing sweet and sour taste.

 

Propagation:

 

The tree is generally propagated from seeds, though it can be grafted. No named cultivars are known. Seeds lose viability if dried, but can retain viability for a period of months if kept moisture.

It is a fairly fast-grower for a Garcinia and can fruit within 2-3 years from seed
