পরিচিতিঃ

ফলের দেশ আমাদের বাংলাদেশ। অন্যান্য সব ফলের মধ্যে আমাদের দেশে জাম অন্যতম। অন্য সব মৌসুমি ফলের তুলনায় জামের স্থায়ীকাল কম হলেও এটি পুষ্টিগুণে অতুলনীয়। আমরা সবসময় সাধারণত কালো জাম দেখেই অভ্যস্ত। কিন্তু সাদা জাম সচরাচর আমাদের চোখে খুব একটা পড়ে না। কালো জাতের জামের পাশাপাশি ইদানীং সাদা জাতের জাম বেশ জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করছে। সাদা জাম আকারে বড় হয়, খেতে খুব মিষ্টি হয় এবং ফলনও বেশ ভাল হয়। সাদা জাম গাছের চারা ড্রামে করে ছাদে লাগানো যায় এবং জমিতে বাণিজ্যিকভাবেও চাষ করা যায়।

জাম সাধারণত তাজা ফল হিসাবে ব্যবহার হলেও এ থেকে রস, স্কোয়াশ ও অন্যান্য সংরক্ষিত খাদ্য তৈরি করা যায়। রসালো ফল জামে রয়েছে প্রচুর পরিমাণে ভিটামিন সি, জিংক, কপার,গ্লুকোজ, ডেক্সট্রোজ, ফ্রুক্টোজ, ফাইবার, অ্যান্টিঅক্সিডেন্ট, স্যালিসাইলেটসহ অসংখ্য উপাদান। তাই কাজ করবার শক্তি যোগানো এবং ভিটামিন সি এর অভাবজনিত রোগ প্রতিরোধ ছাড়াও সাদা জাম শরীরের ক্ষতিকর কোলেস্টেরল কমায়, ডায়াবেটিস নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে, রক্তচাপের উঠানামা রোধ করে, হার্ট সতেজ রাখে। সাদা জাম মূত্রনালীর সংক্রমণ ঠেকানো ছাড়াও হাজারো গুণে সমৃদ্ধ। ফলে সাদা জামের কদর বাড়ছে প্রতিনিয়ত। জাম পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশে বিভিন্ন নামে পরিচিত। যেমন- জাম্বুল, জাম্ভুল, জাম্বু, জাম্বুলা, জাভা  প্লাম, জামুন, ড্যামসন প্লাম, ডুহাট প্লাম, জাম্বোলান প্লাম,পর্তগিজ প্লাম ইত্যাদি।

 

সাদা জামের অন্যান্য বৈশিষ্ট্য সমুহঃ

১। সাদা জাম থাইল্যান্ডের একটি জাত। ফলন হয় বছরে একবার।

২। গাছের বয়স যত বাড়বে ফলন তত বেশী হবে।

৩। সাদা জাম আকারে বড়, অত্যন্ত মিষ্টি, রসালো এবং সু-স্বাদু।

৪। সাদা জাম যত বেশী পাকবে তত বেশী সাদা হবে।

৫। বাণিজ্যিকভাবে ভাল ফলনের জন্য একটি থেকে আরেকটি গাছের রোপণ দুরত্ব হওয়া উচিত অন্তত ১০ ফুট।

৬। রোপণের সময় জৈবসার, শুকনো গোবর সার ব্যবহার করতে হয়। সময়মত কীটনাশক ও স্প্রে করতে হয়। এছাড়া তেমন কোন যত্নের প্রয়োজন পড়েনা।

৭। সাদা জাম দেশী কালো জামের চেয়ে অনেকটা আলাদা। দেশী কালো জাম কিছুটা টক হয়। সাদা জাম মিষ্টি হয় এবং স্বাদ হয় বেশী।

৮। বাণিজ্যিক ভাবে সাদা জাম খুব বেশী চাষ না হলেও শখের বশে অনেকেই বাসা বাড়ির আঙ্গিনা ও ছাদে ড্রামে করে লাগিয়ে থাকেন।

৯। তিন বছর সময়ের মধ্যেই গাছে ফল আসে এবং গাছের ডগা ভেঙ্গে দিলে গাছ ঝোপালো হয়। ফলে ফলন হয় বেশী।

১০। সাদা জাম আকারে বড়, মিষ্টি, রসালো ও সু-স্বাদু হওয়ায় কদর বাড়ছে প্রতিদিন। ফলে বাড়ছে বাণিজ্যিক সম্ভাবনা।
