পানের পরিচিতি ও ঐতিহ্যঃ

মিষ্টি পানকে অনেকেই গাছ পান নামেও ডাকেন এবং জানেন। মিষ্টি পান পিপুল পরিবারভুক্ত গ্রীষ্মমন্ডলীয় অঞ্চলের একপ্রকার গুল্মজাতীয় গাছের পাতা। আর্য এবং আরবগণ পানকে তাম্বুল নামে অভিহিত করত। নিশ্বাসকে সুরভিত করা এবং ঠোঁট ও জিহবাকে লাল করার জন্য মানুষ পান খায়। অবশ্য পানে কিছুটা মাদকতার আনন্দও বিদ্যমান। প্রধানত দক্ষিণ এশিয়া, উপসাগরীয় অঞ্চলের দেশসমূহ, দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়া ও প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরীয় অঞ্চলের মানুষ পান খায়। কেবল স্বভাব হিসেবেই নয়, বাংলাদেশে ঐতিহ্যগতভাবে সামাজিক রীতি, ভদ্রতা এবং আচার-আচরণের অংশ হিসেবেই পানের ব্যবহার চলে আসছে। অনুষ্ঠানাদিতে পান পরিবেশন দ্বারা প্রস্থানের সময় ইঙ্গিত করা হয়। এক সময় উৎসব, পূজা ও পুণ্যাহে পান ছিল অবিচ্ছেদ্য অংশ। প্রাচীন অভিজাত জনগোষ্ঠীর মাঝে পান তৈরি এবং তা সুন্দরভাবে পানদানিতে সাজানো লোকজ শিল্প হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি পেত।

পানের বরজ সমাচার ও চাষাবাদঃ

অতীতে বাংলাদেশের সকল অঞ্চলেই পানচাষ করা হতো, যদিও পান উৎপাদনের ক্ষেত্রে দিনাজপুর, রংপুর, মেদিনীপুর (পশ্চিমবঙ্গে), চট্টগ্রাম ইত্যাদি জেলা ছিল বিখ্যাত। পান চাষের জন্য যেমন বিশেষ ধরনের জমির প্রয়োজন তেমনি প্রচুর যত্নেরও দরকার হয়। পান চাষের জন্য নির্বাচিত জমি সাধারণত একটু উঁচু, মাটির ধরন শক্ত এবং জলাশয় ও পুকুর ইত্যাদির ধারে কাছে হওয়া বাঞ্ছনীয়। পানের বাগানকে বলা হয় বরজ এবং একটি বরজের আয়তন সাধারণত বারো থেকে কুড়ি শতাংশের মধ্যে সীমিত থাকে। পানের বরজ তৈরির জন্য পাশের কোন জমি থেকে মাটি কেটে বরজের স্থানে ফেলে জায়গাটিকে উঁচু করে নিতে হয়। প্রথাগতভাবে বরজে সরিষার খৈল ও গোবরকে সার হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হতো।

পান চাষে ব্যাপক অর্থনৈতিক সম্ভাবনাঃ

মিষ্টি পান উৎপাদনে অধিক পুঁজি বিনিয়োগ প্রয়োজন। তবে এতে আয়ও যথেষ্ট।

Many people refer to sweet betel leaf as “gach pan” and are familiar with it. The betel leaf is a type of vine plant belonging to the Piperaceae family of the tropical region. Aryans and Arab tribes called betel “tambul”. People chew betel to freshen their breath and to redden their lips and tongues. However, betel also contains some addictive elements. Mainly in South Asia, countries of the Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region, people chew betel. In addition to being a habit, the use of betel in Bangladesh is also part of social customs, propriety, and etiquette. The presentation of betel at gatherings indicates the time for departure. Once upon a time, betel was an integral part of festivals, worship, and auspicious occasions. Among ancient elite groups, the preparation of betel and the decoration of betel containers were recognized as a form of art.

In the past, betel cultivation was practiced in all regions of Bangladesh, although certain districts like Dinajpur, Rangpur, Medinipur (in West Bengal), Chittagong, etc., were famous for betel production. The chosen land for betel cultivation is generally slightly elevated, with strong soil types, and preferably close to water bodies or ponds. The betel garden is called a “baroj”, and the area of a baroj is usually limited to about twelve to fourteen decimal points. To prepare the betel garden, soil is cut from adjacent land and raised at the betel site, making the place elevated. Traditionally, mustard cake and manure were used as fertilizers for betel production.
